Latest polling of Iowa GOP caucusgoers following latest GOP Debate shows support for key issues, including biofuels
DES MOINES, IOWA (NOVEMBER 20, 2023) – A statewide survey of 800 likely Republican caucusgoers reveals nearly half of respondents (44%) are planning to support Donald Trump at the January 15 GOP caucus. Amb. Nikki Haley and Gov. Ron DeSantis are in a dead heat, coming in at 17% each. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy garnered 5% of support, followed by 4% for Gov. Chris Christie, 1% for Gov. Doug Burgum, and <1% for Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
The survey also showed significant support for biofuels, including on key issues such as permanent nationwide access to E15, the Renewable Fuel Standard, and U.S.-based standards for renewable aviation fuel. A memo on the survey results can be found HERE.
“This polling definitively shows presidential candidates what they’ve already been hearing on the campaign trail: biofuels are tremendously important to Iowans,” said Fields of Freedom Executive Director Jake Swanson. “To any candidate who wants to win Iowa, the proof is in the numbers. Iowans demand detailed policy on how you will support biofuels, and their livelihoods, from the Oval Office. The time to stand up for biofuels is now.”
The importance of these issues to Iowans, such as expanding access and growing demand for biofuels, has prompted several candidates to announce their support.
At a rally in Council Bluffs, IA, former President Donald Trump said, “I will end the Biden assault on Iowa ethanol…we won’t just increase ethanol production in our own country, we will make it our mission to export ethanol all over the world.”
In an op-ed published in the Des Moines Register, Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote, “We need to embrace energy that is produced in America and that supports American jobs. As president, I will work with leaders like Gov. Kim Reynolds to support her request for approval of E15 for year-round use.”
At a Town Hall event in Waterloo, IA, Amb. Nikki Haley said, “When it comes to ethanol, I
completely support it…I’m going to be completely supportive of biofuels. And we’re going to be completely supportive of making sure we are as energy independent as we can be.”
The survey showed strong majorities saying American ethanol production is important to American energy independence (91%), income for farmers (92%), job creation (91%), lowering gas prices (90%), and the overall economy (84%). In addition, 94% of survey respondents believe it is important that the United States becomes less dependent on foreign oil and more energy independent by utilizing biofuels that are made in America.
“Republican caucus voters are strongly supportive of biofuels, such as ethanol. Strong majorities of these voters say the next President of the United States should make it easier to access biofuels and believe a candidate for President should include ethanol in their energy plan,” said Nicholas Thompson, Project Director at Arc Insights for this survey.
